How to Balance Your Pool's pH (And Why It Matters More Than Chlorine)

Most pool problems people blame on chlorine actually start with pH. Get pH right first, and everything else — chlorine effectiveness, swimmer comfort, equipment lifespan — gets dramatically easier.

What pH actually controls

pH measures how acidic or basic your pool water is, on a scale of 0 to 14. For swimming pools, the target range is 7.2–7.6, with 7.4 being close to ideal — it's the same pH as human tears, which is why properly balanced water doesn't sting your eyes.

Here's the part most people miss: pH doesn't just affect comfort. It directly controls how well your chlorine works. At a high pH, chlorine becomes far less effective at killing bacteria and algae, even if your chlorine reading looks fine on a test strip. You can have "enough" chlorine in the water and still get algae growth, simply because the pH is too high for that chlorine to do its job.

Why order matters: alkalinity first

Total alkalinity is pH's stabilizer. If your alkalinity is off, your pH will swing wildly no matter how carefully you adjust it — you'll add acid, watch pH drop, and then watch it climb right back up within a day. This is one of the most common frustrations pool owners run into, and it's almost always an alkalinity problem disguised as a pH problem.

The fix is to always balance total alkalinity (target: 80–120 ppm) before fine-tuning pH. Once alkalinity is in range, pH adjustments hold steady instead of bouncing back.

Quick Diagnosis
If you've adjusted your pH multiple times and it keeps drifting back to the same spot within a day or two, stop adjusting pH directly and test your alkalinity first. That's almost always the real issue.

How to raise or lower pH

To raise pH (if it's testing low), use soda ash (sodium carbonate). Pre-dissolve it in a bucket of water before adding it to the pool — adding it dry can cloud the water temporarily and doesn't dissolve evenly.

To lower pH (if it's testing high — the far more common issue in most pools), use muriatic acid or dry acid (sodium bisulfate). Add it slowly near a return jet with the pump running, and never pour it in one spot — this can damage your pool finish in concentrated areas.

After any pH adjustment, wait at least 4 hours and retest before making further changes or adding other chemicals. Pool chemistry changes aren't instant, and stacking adjustments too quickly is one of the most common ways people overcorrect and end up bouncing between problems.

How often should you test pH?

For a standard chlorine pool, test 2-3 times per week during swim season. If you have a saltwater pool, test more frequently — pH tends to drift upward faster in saltwater systems due to the electrolysis process that generates chlorine, so 2-3 times per week is closer to a minimum than a guideline.
